Chris,

I've been poking around and read the above article but I am still concerned about taking my phone to the US this week. I have the Pearl, yes I know you know that but for others it might be helpful :), on Fido. I only have the data plan that gives me email and BBerry messenger etc. Will I get nailed if I don't make any calls but I retrieve email?

You're the best!

Regardless of using Google Voice or any other voice calling system, if you are in Vancouver with a Toronto phone number, and you receive a phone call, you are paying long distance for that call. The call is always routed to the Toronto exchange where your number is located and then sent to the area where your wireless phone is. Calls answered are long distance.

Placing a call with Google Voice is a little different. If you are using the Google Voice app for BlackBerry or Android (or other platforms as they come around) you are still placing a phone call out. If the Google Voice access number is in an area code long distance from Vancouver, you will still be charged long distance for the call. If it is a toll free number, you would only be charged your regular air time and no long distance.

The only way to avoid charges would be to route a call over the internet either with a VoIP connection (such as a SIP client) on your phone, or to use VoIP software on a computer.

Rogers and Fido do offer a service that lets you use your phone over a wi-fi router, but I have never tested it in another calling region.

How would roaming work with a Google Voice number? If I have a Toronto wireless number, and I make a call in Vancouver routed through my GV number (or receive a call routed through my GV number) how will I be charged?

that's interesting about the GPS having to be secured to the vehicle. I transfer mine from the Mazda 5 where it sits in it's mount to the Honda civic where it sits on a rubber sticky pad near the gauges. It's pretty solid in there but not mounted to the vehicle.

Wonder if I can get a ticket for that?

and what about mounting my phone to the dash where I can see the GPS screen in it..?

I'm sure that there will be a lot of tickets thrown out of court in regards to this law.

Our Hosted PBX Phone Service provides a single number for phone and voicemail for your business. Your callers can be greeted with an automatic voice announcement welcoming them to your company and provide options (prompts) to contact you (1 for sales, 2 for support etc). Calls can be routed to a Voice over Internet phone line, or forwarded to an existing line, including a cell phone. Pricing starts at $40/month and depends on number of users and usage. This is a great product for a company just starting out, or wanting to get into a IP phone system without the larger capital costs involved in purchasing a full system. The hosted service is targeted at companies between 1 - 15 users.

I am sure many citizens will not be happy about a law that bans and they will probably use their devices anyway as they do here in California. The law in California is that you may not use your cell phone while driving without a ear piece yet many people still continue to. It is like the seat belt law that went into effect. It is for safety yet people will not abide until they start getting or hearing other people get tickets.
